Rebel Or Obey

We at 3 Forks Lab, inspired and frustrated in equal measure by recent events, are happy to announce our latest project, REBEL OR OBEY. It is an homage to genuine rebellion, an affirmation of our love of unconventionality inside and outside of the kitchen, of the spirit of adventure, of our cutting-edge sensibilities. The title also suggests our hatred of blind obedience. It is an ideal way to channel the junky energy swelling inside of us over the past several months. We invite all the like-minded to join us.
The main feature of REBEL OR OBEY is a scavenger hunt. The setting is Old Nicosia. A total of six posters will be hidden in six different locations, each with its own rebellion-related theme, and bearing its own QR code. Scanning each QR code with a smart device will allow players to access additional information on each theme. The first person to spot all six posters will be the winner of a private dinner for four cooked by our chef, Petros Andrianou. A few words about the general theme of this project. It is an all too obvious fact of contemporary culture that rebellion has been reduced to a marketing cliche targeting the young and the impressionable. We at 3 Forks Lab, ever allergic to superficiality, conformity and cookie-cutter convention, wish to reclaim the term, to put some meat back into it, as it were. We do so by celebrating the spirit of those true one-offs — individuals who refuse to pander, who carve their own paths, who are willing to take tremendous risks in order to preserve their integrity as artists, craftspersons and thinkers.
The culinary world, of course, has no shortage of people who make it their job to flout convention. We, however, have no trouble identifying a genuine article when we see it. The Basque chef / owner Luis Aduriz of Mugaritz fits our bill. Despite the fact that the culinary establishment and the media have been lavishing him with recognition for decades, he will not be lulled to complacency. He combines an old-school, sleeve-rolling, dues-paying work ethic with the intellectual agility, promiscuity and openness that one only encounters in a true innovator. In our war against cliche, culinary and otherwise, we could not hope for a better source of inspiration.
